Introduction to Cells
What are Cells?
A cell is a unit of life. All living things are made up of one (unicellular) or more (multicellular) cells.
What is the meaning of cell?
The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism which is microscopic.
What are cells made up of?
> Cell membrane-
The cell membrane holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
> Vacuole-
The vacuole is the storage are that contains air, water, wastes and food pieces.
> Cytoplasm-
The cytoplasm is the liquid part where energy is released and new substances are made.
> Cell nuclease-
The cell nuclease controls the chemical reactions, reproduction and growth of the cell.
> Mitochondria-
Mitochondria are very small parts of the cell that contain energy components, glucose and oxygen.
What are the differences between plant and animal cells?
- Animal cells do not have a cell wall or chloroplasts.
- Plants do have have a cell wall and chloroplasts.
- Animal cells are round and irregular.
- Plant cells have rectangular shapes.
